Checking In

It’s been a while since I last wrote. Although, there are a lot of drafts… I just never finish writing, and then things change…. bla bla bla…

Anyway, 2017 has been prety good so far. Work finally moved to the new office, and it’s awesome. The views are great, the atmosphere is great, and it is pretty awesome in general. There are two downsides (though nothing major); the first is the office temp. You’d think being surrounded by floor to ceiling glass that it’d be hot as balls, but it’s actually damn nippy in there. And this is coming from someone whose never owned a coat and wore shorts/skorts in the winter. Now a days, I’ll sit at my desk with my wool coat on! Who knows what summer is going to be like. The second is the location of the bathroom in relation to where my desk is. It’s a damn city block away! Like literally. While, the benefits of getting extra walking in outweigh the location… but, when you gotta go, that’s a hell of a long walk.

2017 has been good to us, so far. I think all of the sickness has made it’s course. All of us, except Amelia, caught something. The latest for me was Strep Throat, which hurt like hell. Thank goodness the antibiotics worked quickly.

We received our tax overpayment this past week and Greg and I had a shopping spree at IKEA. We got a whole new bedroom set, including a new mattress, new shelves and bookcases, rug, and other little things. Like, we spent $1500 – not including Greg’s employee discount (which is 15%) or the $420 in cash that we got back from the recalled dressers. It was a long weekend of moving heavy stuff up and down three flights of stairs. And, we still have stuff to put together. But, Greg and I are totally loving our new bedroom set. We got the Hemnes line – so everything is coodinates. I’ve never slept in a brand new bed; every bed I’ve slept in since I first moved away from home was a hand-me-down. Nothing wrong with them, and they lasted years.. decades even. But, we were ready for something that was “ours”. It’s truly the little things that can make you happy.

I’ve enrolled Sofia into soccer this season. It’s more of a fundamentals of soccer than an actual soccer league. She’s hella excited, as am I. And, Amelia has expressed interest as well… though, she’s thinking she and Sofia will be on the same team. Had to break it to her that that won’t be possible given their age difference. But, either way they’re both excited.

I’ve booked Greg’s 40th birthday cruise! We’re excited for this big vacation. It’s a long ways away.. like 399 days away! A lot of time to kill between now and then. In the mean time, we’re looking at spending a week in Ocean City, MD this summer. It’s been decades since I’ve spent more than 2 or 3 days in Ocean City, so this’ll be fun. I think the girls will enjoy it. We’re likely going to book with the Francis Scott Key Resort because it pretty much offers everything we want and need on-site. And, offers a shuttle to the beach which would save money, and time, on parking!

Well, that’s enough for a small catch-up for now.

Gettin’ Old

It’s my birthday!

I’ve been celebrating my birthday since last Friday. My Mom took the girls for an overnight stay, so Greg and I got to go out on a date (I had a gift card to a restaurant) and it was so nice to just get out and not have to stress about the girls.

On Saturday, I left Greg behind and went to hang out with my Mom and girls. My Mom picked up one of my favorite steaks, a T-bone!, and made her best meatballs and sauce (for me to take home for lunches), and I got to cook dinner on the grill. Then, the girls made me a pistachio pudding pie!

On Sunday, my girlfriend, Michele, drove down and took me out to lunch and drinks at Cheesecake Factory. Then, we wondered (Read: Walked off the drinks and cheesecake) around the mall. After walking off our meal, we went to get our eyebrows waxed, and wondered around Target. We did a lot of wondering. She kept me busy for nearly 6 hours. It was a good visit, though. We always have a great time catching up.

Today, I took the day off from work. I had scheduled an appointment for Amelia (and us, really) with a child psychiatrist. Greg and I feel we need help with some things. It was a good visit, and we have a plan in action and I think we’ll do some family therapy. After the appointment, we took Amelia to school and came home. I took an epic nap with Sofia (it was awesome), then once Amelia was home and all of her homework was done (and checked), we went out to dinner to… Chuck E Cheese! This was a surprise for the girls, since we were planning on doing this for Amelia on her birthday, but that’s when Greg injured his ankle.

The girls had a great time, and that’s all that I wanted for my birthday.

Weekend Fun

It was a beautiful weekend. The sun shined bright, the skies were clear, and the temperature was great.

Saturday, on a whim, we decided to head to The Maryland Zoo. It’s been years since I last visited. As a mater of fact, I don’t think Amelia was even 2 years old the last time we went as a family. Unfortunately, the zoo isn’t what it used to be. Half of the attractions are no longer in place & are closed off. But, that didn’t stop us from buying an annual pass. This is the first year we’ve bought the family pass. I figured since we would have paid nearly $50 in admission fees, the family pass would have paid for itself after two trips. Plus, since Greg is now a stay-at-home daddy, he can take the girls anytime he wants.

Amelia had fun and was asking to go back today. Also, given all the walking we did yesterday (including a trip to the grocery store after visiting the zoo) Amelia slept in for the first time in a long time! We all slept in, except for Sofia.

Sofia fell asleep as soon as we reached the children’s area

Indoor cave

Hungry giraffe.

Today, we went to Ft. Smallwood Park. It’s one of my favorite county parks to visit. It has a nice play area and lots of grills for charcoal cooking. Plus, it’s nice to watch the ships come and go.

Greg and I did a first: we let Amelia play at the play area all by herself. Don’t worry, Greg was watching the area like a hawk (very protective of his girls). It was scary yet exciting to let our daughter experience independence. I am happy to report she did very well. Interestingly, she came back to us after about a half hour & hung out with us the rest of our time there.

Overall, it was a great weekend. We didn’t do any chores other than a load or two of laundry and we spent a lot of time together.

Sizzleing Spring

We have been without airconditioning since Wednesday. Thank goodness the cold front came in when it did, otherwise I’d be staying the night at a friends house.

Current Events in our household:

  • Amelia is visiting with my Mom until the weekend of the 11th. On the 13th, Amelia starts her first day of “school” – albeit a Summer School/camp. I get to pack a lunch and everything for Amelia! I can’t wait; I’m so excited about her new adventures.
  • I am doing well in my current law class; holding onto a strong A. At the same time, I’ve started two new classes at my ‘new’ school; so I’m currently enrolled in 3 classes.
  • I have a paper due on stem cell research and legislation and it’s due one week from today and I haven’t even begun to start my research or any reading.
  • I’ve survived one full month at work on my new schedule. I miss the morning hours at work, but I am loving the traffic free commute.
  • There are only 5 months and 6 days remaining to cruise date!
  • Greg has lost nearly 70lbs in the past 14 months
  • The pool is open and I can not wait to go swimming!
  • I don’t miss my part-time job; I thought I would, but I’m enjoying the summer weekend free
  • My cousin, April, is going to have a c-section on July 7th and I can’t wait to snuggle a new baby.
  • Also, Greg and I are going to do April’s maternity pictures.
  • There are going t o be a lot of changes at work during the next few weeks that I’m excited, and a little fearful, about.
The bullet points are everything in a nutshell. I’ll write about last weekends adventures later; there’s too much to share – especially with the pictures.

When I can’t sleep…

I blog. Sort of. And play Words with Friends.

Why am I up at 2:30am? It’s not like I had a lot of caffeine today. On the plus side, I don’t have to be at work until 11 so I will be able to sleep in… Amelia permitting.

May is such a busy month for us; it’s been non-stop weekends since the beginning and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. Eventually, I’d like to write about Easter, my promotion at work, Mother’s Day, Greg’s 33rd birthday, and other events but I don’t know when I’ll have the time (unless I stay up until 2:30am every night).

In other news, I’ve switched schools and I’m now a student of the University of Maryland! My first class begins June 1 and it’s accounting– should be easy, right?

Greg and I have enrolled Amelia into a Summer Camp of sorts. It’s a private school that offers a summer program and it sounds awesome! I hope there are a lot of opportunities for volunteers or chaperones! In addition to the summer school, Amelia is enrolled in Pre-K at the same private school. I can’t believe my baby girl is grown up!

We’re still on for the cruise in November and we’re hoping to get a trip to Ocean City, MD sometime in August before school starts.

Amelia has been asking Greg and I every week since October if we’re going back to Disney World. We tell her that we will go back one day. However, we have a plan: a surprise trip for Amelia’s 6th birthday! We’re totally going be like the Disney commercials where the kids are told once they wake up. Unfortunately, we have to wait a year and a half but that gives us enough time to save for a stay at the Polynesian or Animal Kingdom Lodge.

House hunting is coming along. We are meeting with the financial counselor in June to move on to the next step and we hope to have a home by next Spring at the latest.

So, there is a lot going on in my little world.

19 Days & Counting

We’re 19 days from our first family vacation!

I’m still in a bit of disbelief that we’re actually taking a week long vacation, as a whole, and that we’re going to Walt Disney World! To be honest, I was never a Disney fan… I was more of a Loony Tunes person (Tweety was my favorite); but since Amelia is all about Tinkerbell and Minnie Mouse, we have to go to Disney World.

A girlfriend of mine from high school made a Minnie Mouse dress for Amelia:

She also made a cute bracelet and two matching hair bows (or barrettes… however you call them). Amelia absolutely LOVES the dress! I had to bribe her to take it off!

.::. Side note: I totally hate the new Flickr .::.

This weekend we accomplished a lot of our ‘To-Do”s before the trip:

We all got hair cuts

We got a good bit of shopping done and started packing!

Also, Amelia and I made a Countdown Chain to our trip!

And, probably most excitingly, we received our ‘tickets’ to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!

Busy Bee

These past few weeks have gone by so fast!

My weekend with Michele was awesome! We hung out and explored parts of Maryland that I’ve never seen, or thought that I’d never visit. And, to Greg’s delight, I managed very well during the long car ride… all thanks to the iPhone 4 and its incredible battery life!

The adventure didn’t stop when we left! When we made it home, Amelia started having some kind of allergic reaction to something; she was breaking out is hives and or rashes all over her body. We took Amelia to urgent care and they had no idea what was going on (wow, what help y’all are) and prescribed a steroid to stop the inflammation. The medication worked, somewhat. Fortunately, we have an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist at Johns Hopkins Childrens Center this week; maybe we’ll learn what is going on with Amelia’s skin.

… … … … …

This week I have to take my final exam! I can’t believe I’ve finished my 6th class. If I earn an A for this course (which I currently have), then that gives me 5 A’s and 1 C and a GPA of 3.66. Not bad, if I so say myself.

… … … … …

We’re only 34 days from our first family vacation! I received some mail from Disney’s Magic Express, which were stickers for our luggage in order to have them delivered to our room when we arrive. Unfortunately, there was an error on our reservation which meant a new booklet needs to be sent. Boo. But, Amelia did have fun with the stickers!
